Stitched Stories: Sustainable Statement Quilts

What if a quilt could hold more than warmth — what if it could hold your voice?

That’s the heart of Stitched Stories, a workshop where fabric becomes a canvas for expression. Together, we’ll explore the art of statement quilting — using cloth, text, and symbolism to tell stories that are personal, political, or social. Whether you’re interested in making a quilt for protest, for poetry, or simply to hold your truth, this class will guide you through the process of designing work that speaks.

Why I Teach This Class

For me, quilting and storytelling are inseparable. Stitching is how I process life — the struggles, the joys, and the questions I want to leave behind as messages for the future. A quilt is never just fabric and thread; it’s a record of who we are, what we believe, and what we hope others will remember.

That’s why I created this class: to help others discover that same power. You don’t have to be an expert quilter to make something meaningful. You only need cloth, a story, and the willingness to let your hands translate what your heart wants to say.

What Makes This Workshop Different

We’ll focus on sustainability — thoughtfully sourcing and reusing materials to create art that doesn’t just tell a story, but also honors the cloth it’s made from. Old clothes, worn linens, scraps, and reclaimed fabrics will take on new life as part of your visual language. By the end of the session, you’ll walk away with a completed (or nearly completed) statement mini quilt and a deeper sense of how quilting can act as both personal expression and public art.

From there, we’ll move through design exercises, layout planning, and techniques for incorporating words and imagery into cloth. We’ll close with a group reflection and storytelling session — because quilts aren’t just meant to be seen, they’re meant to be shared.
